30k Budget: MPV or Large 6-Seater SUV? I Test-Driven Both for My Family of Four

With so many friends hitting the road on self-drive trips lately, I've been asked repeatedly: For a 30k budget, should you buy an MPV or a large 6-seater SUV?

Actually, I already had my answer. But after being asked so many times recently, I test-drove two vehicles again: the MPV representative Gaoshan 8 and the BYD Tang EV, which friends have been urging me to review.

Two vehicles, both equipped with the standard fridge, TV, and reclining seats—each a flagship model from its brand. Previously, I test-drove them alone; this time, I brought my wife and kids along.

Let's start with parking. The Gaoshan 8 has dimensions of 5280*1960*1900 mm, while the Datang EV measures 5263*1999*1800 mm. Clearly, despite their different body styles, these two vehicles are very similar in size.

Since my wife has always driven SUVs, parking during the Datang EV test drive felt manageable. Of course, the 360-degree panoramic view and transparent image features made reversing much easier. When testing the Gaoshan 8, however, the vehicle's size made me feel uneasy while driving—I kept glancing around—and I lacked confidence when parking. Fortunately, the Gaoshan 8 also includes a 360-degree panoramic view, transparent image, and side blind-spot monitoring, making parking significantly less challenging.

Actually, she wasn't aware that the two vehicles are nearly identical in size. In her mind, MPVs are simply larger than SUVs.

During the test drive, we had multiple opportunities to sit in both the second and third rows. Ultimately, my child and wife agreed that the seating experience in the Gaoshan 8 surpassed that of the Datang EV.

Both the Gaoshan 8 and the Datang EV feature independent second-row seats. However, the Gaoshan 8 offers greater interior height, resulting in a much more spacious feel. This extra headroom also makes accessing the third row easier, especially for children. Inside the Gaoshan 8, siblings can move around freely without any effort. In contrast, the Datang EV feels considerably less comfortable in this regard.

The second-row captain's chairs are a highlight. To be honest, the Datang EV and the Gaoshan 8 are neck-and-neck here; both offer excellent second-row comfort. However, the MPV wins on third-row space. The Gaoshan 8 features a shared rail system for the second and third rows, allowing you to freely adjust seating room as needed. Of course, since this was a test drive with an empty cargo area, the Gaoshan 8's third-row space was showcased to its fullest potential. That said, the Datang EV's third row can comfortably accommodate two adults on long trips, offering ample legroom, a reclining backrest, and a thick, well-cushioned seat with balanced firmness.

However, the second and third rows in the Alpine 8 share a rail design that maximizes passenger space, leaving less room for cargo. Based on my experience with long-distance road trips, if all three rows are occupied, the Alpine 8's trunk storage capacity actually falls short of the Datang EV's.

First, the Dasheng EV features a spacious front trunk with a 252L capacity, perfect for storing your essentials. Additionally, beneath the trunk lid lies a deep under-floor compartment of approximately 94L, ideal for organizing smaller items.

Of course, the most significant difference lies in the driving experience. The Gaoshan 8 feels more stable with a solid chassis, while the Datang EV is more responsive and accelerates faster.

When it comes to intelligent assisted driving and overall tech sophistication, both vehicles showcase their unique identities. Each delivers a smooth, intuitive, and safe driving experience that inspires confidence.

To circle back to the original question: With a budget of 30k, should you buy an MPV or a large six-seater SUV?

If you're a family with two children, frequently travel with parents, or plan long road trips, go for an MPV. The comfort far exceeds other vehicle types.

For a family of three or four where the spouse is the primary driver, choose an SUV. A large six-seater SUV offers versatility for varying passenger counts, better ground clearance, and is ideal for outdoor adventures.

Final advice: With a budget of 30k, choosing the wrong car hurts more than overpaying. Take the whole family for multiple test drives. Avoiding one mistake is worth everything.
